Here is a basic description of what an arc flash is.

Arc flashes are electrical discharges that can produce blindness, burns, and electric shocks. In other words, an arc flash is a phenomenon that happens when a flashover of electric current leaves its intended path and travels through the air from one conductor to another, or to the ground. This is most often caused by, dust, condensation, corrosion, falling tools, accidentally touching the wrong area, material failure, and faulty installation.

An arc flash's results are often violent; when a person or animal is close to the arc flash, serious injury and even death can occur.

Three factors determine the severity of an arc flash injury: how close the worker is to the hazard, Temperature, and how long it takes for the circuit to break.
